Accountability
In a rare personal use of Facebook, I came across something that Andy Carvin had twittered that he was reading: 'Who Can I Blame?'. It's about the present financial crisis in the United States (read: global) and who readers should blame. At the very end of the list of people to blame, Adam Davidson, the author of the article, writes:
...- You. For enjoying the boom years without paying attention to the potential risks. For thinking that voting for one party or another somehow encourages more responsible policies. For loving the rapidly growing price of your house and using it to buy stuff. For spending more than you make. For imagining that someone out there, one guy, caused this because they, alone, are uniquely greedy and you are not greedy...
Poignant. It's refreshing to see articles that point out personal accountability and how it affects things on greater levels. Too often the scapegoat is someone who is decided to be a scapegoat for lack of personal accountability - and while the context is the financial crisis of the day, the point holds true for just about everything that happens on a societal level - be it in a village, town, country, or globally.
Yes, you are accountable.
