Happy Together

One of the songs that will always be with me is Happy Together, by the Turtles. It is a good song, but it is more than just a good song - it is a major part of the soundtrack of my life. This was a song that I grew up with, from the backseat of a 1969 Barracuda and a 1978 Dodge Power Wagon. It was simply a song that my father and I liked - it was his favorite song, and it carried with it a sense of closeness with him. We never were, actually, happy together - but no matter what was happening, when the song played somewhere we would look at each other and smile. We could be in the middle of yelling, and we'd end up singing along despite ourselves. It was like a magic circle for us.

It was his favorite song. And it was impossible for him to be angry when he heard it.

Had I thought about it, I would have played it more often when he was alive.

Probably...

Probably you heard this song before you were born, too. It was "our song" (Think of the photo you have of us on top of a hill, me wearing Pop's hat - or the one from the Moody Blues concert of Pop with a kitten on his shoulder!) It was only natural, then, when you came along, that it became a 'family song.' It's good to know that it still feels the same all these years since.

You left out the 1973 silver Dodge Charger with the power bulge on the hood and a big black stripe down the side. It had a pair of hood locks so the hood wouldn't fly up at high speeds (!?)-- looked tough! We didn't keep it long - Pop had custom ordered it, and then admitted quietly that he had made a mistake. He'd ordered it with the same 318 engine that was so great in the Barracuda, and that proved to be too small to power the Charger. It was a 4 speed, and dropped its transmission halfway across the bridge to Canada when it was less than 3 months old. I don't imagine Pop talked about that one very much!
